Experimental Study of the Fatigue Behavior of Asphalt Binder and Mixture Containing Nanoclay Through Time-Sweep, Strain- Sweep and Bending Beam Methods

Abstract
The resistance of an asphalt mixture is the ability of the mixture to withstand repetitive bending loads without failure. The purpose of this research is to investigate the behavior of asphalt mixtures containing limestone, granite and clay Nano additives. The bitumen used in this study is 60/70 bitumen, and Nano additives were added to the bitumen in the amount of 0, 3 and 6% by weight of asphalt binder. In this research, the time sweep test was performed at strains of 2, 3.5 and 5% using a dynamic shear rheometer test. The strain sweep test was also performed to evaluate the linear and non-linear properties of bitumen. On the asphalt samples, the yield modulus and indirect tensile tests were performed. Also, the four-point bending test was conducted in order to investigate the behavior of asphalt mixtures. The loading strain level used in this research includes 400, 600 and 800 micro-strain. Also, all acceptance tests were done at two average temperatures of 15 and 25 degrees Celsius. The results showed that by adding nanomaterials to bitumen, the linear viscoelastic limit decreased with an increase in shear modulus. It is stated that the addition of Nano clay to bitumen and asphalt mixture increases the durability results of asphalt samples at all strain levels. Also, by increasing the test from 15 to 2 degrees Celsius, the lifetime of asphalt mixtures increases.
