Investigating the Impact of all holding and first holding Control Strategies on Passenger Waiting Time

Abstract

The presence of disturbances in transportation systems changes the travel time, the time of arrival of public transportation vehicles to the station and the desired headway, and the results can increase the waiting time of passengers. The movement of buses is aimed at maintaining the level of service provided to passengers, which is mainly associated with changing the bus movement schedule or implementing operational strategies. One of the measures to solve such problems is the use of control strategies that increase the reliability of urban transportation systems and thus reduce the waiting time of passengers at the station. In this study, a comparison is made between the all holding control strategy and first holding control strategy. For the holding control strategy, two scenarios of non-overtaking conditions of buses and scenarios of non-overtaking conditions of buses have been examined. A separate mathematical model is provided for each of the control strategies of all holding and first holding. In the proposed mathematical models, the effect of the holding control strategy on the waiting time of passengers on the bus and inside the station is investigated. Then a hypothetical example is defined to solve the model and some parameters of the sensitivity analysis model are performed. The results show that the waiting time of passengers in the case of the stop control strategy is reduced by an average of 3.5% compared to the case without the control strategy.
