Impedance Bond is an equipment with low resistance and partly high reactance which includes a ferrite cored winding in parallel with a poly propylene capacitor unit. It provides a continuous path for returning traction current around track isolated areas and makes the application of mechanical insulation joints possible in signaling system; it also utilizes the transfer of traction current to electrical substations. In fact, impedance bond is used in order to limit the signaling system current while let the traction return current flow through its winding. Therefore it is one of the important components in electrified railway signaling systems and traction systems. To improve the performance of signaling system track circuits, as essential tools in automatic train control systems in modern railways and metro lines, this study analyzes the structure and function of impedance bonds which are installed on audio frequency jointless track circuits on Tehran metro line II. First, given the existing topologic and electric guidelines, a complete design for a part of Tehran metro line – as real example - is presented; this includes traction substations (rectifier substations) model, running rails and third rail models, the train model and installed impedance bonds design on TI21-M audio frequency track circuits based on their installation conditions and requirements. Then the mentioned design is simulated in Pspice framework in order to evaluate the effects of electrical and physical parameter changes on the impedance bonds and consequently on track circuit systems. Finally, simulation results are compared and presented with analytical results.
