User-Based Pavement Condition Evaluation Using Smartphone Application

Document Type : Scientific - Research

Abstract

Pavement evaluation is one of the most important criteria in pavement maintenance. Decision makers face with challenges in maintenance planning of road networks with regards to users increasing expectations. The key point is to rigorously evaluate pavement both in objective and subjective manners. This paper aims to develop a model to relate user satisfaction which is a subjective index with an objective index which is easy to calculate. The pavement condition index and pavement roughness have been studied to explore whether or not they have strong relationship with the user satisfactions. Manual pavement evaluation is conducted to compute the pavement condition index and a smartphone application is applied to calculate pavement roughness. In conclusion, pavement roughness shows the best correlation with user satisfaction, while the relationship between user satisfaction and the pavement condition index is not statistically significant. A section of 20 km of Imam Ali Highway is utilized as a case study to successfully validate the model.
