Abstract

In this research paper, a new method is proposed to solve the traffic light phasing problem which distributes the traffic in the network and increases the efficiency of urban traffic networks. The method manages the traffic light phasing by local variables and control the entire traffic of network by common variables between neighbor junctions. The contribution of this paper, is scheduling traffic lights using eigenvector centrality, avoiding regular phasing cycles and global traffic control. This method is based on eigenvector centrality method and a matrix which is called “Junction Matrix”. The junction matrix includes the relation between a junction, its connected links and its neighbor intersections. The efficiency and reliability of the proposed method is evaluated by simulating 5 traffic scenarios over two networks. The networks are generated based on cell transmission model with two different sizes and two way links. Two indicators, “the number of jammed cells”, and “MFD”, are used for evaluation goals. The simulation results indicates the improvement in traffic light phasing problem by the proposed method.
