English

This study examines the travel behavior of elementary school children in rural and suburban areas, with a focus on the influence of parental concerns related to traffic safety, social environment, and the COVID-19 pandemic. Data were collected through a questionnaire distributed among 582 families with elementary school children in schools near major roads in Gilan Province. Using Multinomial Logit Model (MNL), the study analyzes how these factors influenced travel mode choices before and after the pandemic. The findings reveal that parental concerns about traffic and social safety, especially after the pandemic, significantly reduced the use of public transportation and increased reliance on private vehicles. Heightened concerns about crossing busy roads, lack of safe pedestrian infrastructure, and pandemic-related health fears also discouraged active transportation modes. Furthermore, reduced social interactions during the pandemic amplified parents' concerns about their children’s social safety. These results highlight the need to revise educational programs and transportation policies to support safer and more sustainable travel behaviors. Policy recommendations include enhancing safety infrastructure, implementing traffic calming measures, and fostering community engagement to address social environmental concerns. This study provides valuable insights into the factors shaping children’s travel behavior in rural and suburban contexts, offering a foundation for targeted interventions.
