English

Analysis of the determinants influencing work trip mode choice is crucial for developing efficient urban transport policies. While the impact of socio-economic variables and trip characteristics has been extensively studied, psychological factors such as personality traits and behavioral habits have received less systematic attention. This research aims to analyze the role of the Big Five personality dimensions based on the NEO model, users' perceptions of transportation systems, and habit variables on work trip mode choice. This analysis is conducted alongside more conventional variables like travel time, travel cost, and individual characteristics. The present case study was conducted in District 6 of Tehran Municipality. Data were collected using 490 completed questionnaires, including the NEO personality questionnaire, questions assessing user perceptions, and work trip information. For data analysis, a hybrid approach combining structural equation modeling (SEM) to extract latent perceptual variables and a hybrid ordered discrete choice model to explain mode choice was employed. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses identified two significant perceptual factors: comfort and reliability; the scheduling factor was not statistically significant. The results indicated that the habit variable has a significant positive impact on the repetition of the same mode choice. Among perceptual factors, comfort and reliability significantly influenced mode choice. Regarding personality traits, conscientiousness and neuroticism were associated with a decreased preference for public transport, while higher agreeableness increased its desirability. Additionally, higher levels of extraversion and openness reduced the preference for taxi usage.
