Containerized Transport Mode Choice between Rail and Road in Iran

Abstract

Although container transportation is growing in the world, in Iran the share of containerized freight transportation is only 1.6 percent of the total freight transportation. Despite the relative advantages of rail transportation than road transportation, the share of this mode in Iran is negligible. As in year 2013, only 0.5 million tons (8%) of the total containerized cargo (6.5 million tons) transported by railway system. This study aimed to evaluate reasons for the superiority of road transport in the container shipping and the reluctance of container owners of transportation with rail system. For this purpose, the binary logit model based on the Bill of Lading in rail and road organizations was used. The value of variables that related to container mode choice for all origin-destination pairs computed From Various sources of information. The best binary logit model, based on various statistical tests was identified and the most important factors involved in choosing container were introduced. the variables of the best mode choice model are  if the origin is port, if the destination is port, intensive freight over than 10,000 tons, road travel time, railway travel time, High demanded origin-destination, operated rail origin-destination and the ratio of total rail cost to road. Road travel time, rail travel time and the ratio of total rail cost to road are the most influential variables in the model, due to their high elasticity. Compare the values of rail tonnage that predicted by the model and rail tonnage actually showed the model can predict close to reality. Finally, based on the model, some solutions have been proposed to increase the share of Rail transportation that tariff correction, dry ports construction, and track scheduling are the most important solutions.
